In consideration of its bicentennial, Indiana University was in the midst of envisioning how it would impact the future. As part of that effort, the IU Alumni Magazine turned to alumni for their hopes, their predictions of the world to come. The numerous articles cover a range of topics. My job as art director was to tie everything together in a single theme.
I worked with photographer Wendi Chitwood to create the cover image of Alayna Boone. Working from the visual concept of “look forward,” Chitwood captured the metaphorical future reflected in Alayna’s eyes. At the time, Alayna was not yet one year old. She was in the midst of teething. Alayna never fussed, but the slobber was ferocious. The Photoshop clean-up effort was intense.
To create the interior spreads, graphic designer Matt Shoemaker and I chose a headline font, bright, futuristic colors, and repeating element of three lined arrow to run throughout the editorial well, pushing the reader further into the future.
